Cool is the 6th studio album by Seela, a veteran Austin singer/songwriter/performer and back-up singer. Though she’s always had deep involvement in the recording process in the past, she has also always had a producer to fall back on. This time Seela took the reins and self-produced the record she wanted to hear.

The songs, some she has been playing live for years, pay no loyalty to any particular style but are the result of her many influences: The Police, Spoon, Anita O’ Day, Heart, Steely Dan, and Bowie to name a few. Pop, Rock, Folk, Gospel and Jazz have all been a part of her 20+ year career as an Austin musician and Cool lets it show.

Backed by her solid-as-a-rock drummer/husband Jon Greene (Patty Griffin, Fastball, Jaimee Harris), her nephew Andrew Casile on guitar, Andrew Pressman (Jimmy LaFave, Nancy & Beth, Anthony DaCosta) on bass, as well as an impressive handful of Austin’s finest, Seela and engineer Britton Beisenherz have created a lush and catchy thirteen-track universe. With gorgeous harmonies and the occasional playful treatment, each song on Cool hits all the right spots.

This CD comes in a lovely gatefold card case as well as a 6 panel lyric booklet with artwork by Seela.

about

I was part of a Song-A-Day challenge for the month of February and realized quickly that keeping things simple was the way to survive. I just wrote a list of attributes of this mysterious yet familiar woman. I think some of her is me, some is who I’d like to be. Maybe neither. Wilson Marks is the MVP on this one for sure. That guitar solo is some beautiful choreography.

lyrics

She can tell tall tales she learned in the cradle
She can whisper low and quiet a room
She can wear high heels and dress like an angel
And with a laser pointer she’ll dissect your doom

And she won’t leave you alone when you cry
No, she won’t leave you to cry
She’s so bad at the good times, yeah she’s bad at good times

See her comfortable in bent situations
She speaks her mind when misunderstood
She can sleep all night, she don’t feel no pressure
From her heart she cries for the less fortunate

And she’s the best thing in your life
She’s the best thing in your life
She’s so bad at the good times, yeah she’s bad at good times

about

seela Austin, Texas

Born to exhausted Indian immigrants on a mild, summer eve, Seela had an average childhood battling the forces of evil with her superhuman strength. On quality meals of Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, Fozy Bear, & U2, she flourished in nerdy-ness, topping off @ 5’3″. Though songwriting has yet to lead to fame & fortune, opportunity, adventure, & delight have yet to cease. ... more
