    Cool is the 6th studio album by Seela, a veteran Austin singer/songwriter/performer and back-up singer. Though she’s always had deep involvement in the recording process in the past, she has also always had a producer to fall back on. This time Seela took the reins and self-produced the record she wanted to hear.

    The songs, some she has been playing live for years, pay no loyalty to any particular style but are the result of her many influences: The Police, Spoon, Anita O’ Day, Heart, Steely Dan, and Bowie to name a few. Pop, Rock, Folk, Gospel and Jazz have all been a part of her 20+ year career as an Austin musician and Cool lets it show.

    Backed by her solid-as-a-rock drummer/husband Jon Greene (Patty Griffin, Fastball, Jaimee Harris), her nephew Andrew Casile on guitar, Andrew Pressman (Jimmy LaFave, Nancy & Beth, Anthony DaCosta) on bass, as well as an impressive handful of Austin’s finest, Seela and engineer Britton Beisenherz have created a lush and catchy thirteen-track universe. With gorgeous harmonies and the occasional playful treatment, each song on Cool hits all the right spots.

Again, another Song Game song. Once I saw the title I knew I wasn’t going to write a song about a guy playing his last show, which means I had to work the idea into a completely different story. It took me a while to get that first verse, but once I did, the rest of the story seemed obvious, though quite dark. Again, Emily Gimble’s piano on this track and Stephen Carolan’s guitar are both so thoughtful and serve the song so well.

If not for the seat at his final performance

by a spell that took sight from his eyes

he tried not to fall to his pride
Verses he’d recite straight from his memory
though robbed of the light of the moon
And me on my knees in the back of the kitchen

My sister was older, she married a merchant
He sold his wares ‘cross the shore
His ship was boarded the thieves took over
Pirates plundered his stores
When he tried to stop them they tore his chest open
And ended a sweet love too soon
I braided her hair and wove through black ribbons
And we sang that mourning tune

Now I’ve been out walking for what seems a century
My family buried and gone
A ghost of the country, a legend to many
They tell of my tales in a song
Oh, I’ve never married or taken a lover
Since sadness became my groom
Imagine my awe the day I discovered
That I was that mourning tune
